Thermal Justice: a serious game
Who suffers most when cities get hotter? And how can we make cities not only cooler, but fairer? In this interactive workshop you will play the Thermal Justice board game, developed by researchers at ETH Zurich and Eawag: a fun and interactive way to explore how buildings, streets, trees, energy systems, and social inequalities shape who feels the heat, and who can escape it.
Working in small teams, you will decide where to plant trees, invest in cooling measures and allocate limited resources to protect people from extreme heat. But be careful: every decision comes with trade-offs. Energy, water, space, and money are limited, and not every district in your city is affected equally by heat. Can you balance competing needs and create a city that is both climate-resilient and socially just?
Test your strategies, confront unexpected consequences, and rethink how cities can become not only cooler, but fairer.
